American Recovery & Reinvestment Act Broadband Technology Opportunities Program will make $7.2 billion available for high-speed communications in underserved areas, according to V10 Partners, an Internet and communications technology consultant.
“PCIA is pleased that Congress and the president recognize the importance of wireless infrastructure to economic stimulus for the U.S. We look forward to working with NTIA and RUS on implementation of the stimulus legislation to facilitate the work of our member companies enabling the full range of wireless services to all users,” said Michael Fitch, president and CEO of PCIA - The Wireless Infrastructure Association.
The program is split into two sections. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration will administer $4.7 billion in consultation with the Federal Communications Commission. A distance learning, telemedicine, and broadband program with a price tag of $2.5 billion will be run by the USDA Rural Utilities Service.
NTIA will be charged with providing broadband service to unserved areas, improved broadband service to underserved areas and provide training, access, service and support. This will include improving access to broadband use by public safety agencies, schools, libraries and medical facilities.
USDA Rural Utilities Service will administer the program for funding the costs of construction, improvement, and acquisition of facilities to provide broadband service to eligible rural communities. The Distance Learning and Telemedicine program will bring electronic educational resources to rural schools and improve the deliver of health care in rural areas.
