Main Tower Falls and Backup Tower Topples, Too, as Nor’easter Strikes S.C. TV Station
The storm’s high winds and heavy snow not only caused the main tower to crumple to the ground, but the station’s backup tower collapsed, as well.
While access has been hampered by 12 to 14 inches of snow, repairs are underway on the 383-foot tower on Hogback Mountain that broadcasts News Channel 7’s signal with CBS programming. It has been determined that the base of the tower can handle a temporary antenna, which was due to arrive this week. The station said it might “take a week or a few weeks to get it up and running again.”
In the meantime, the station is urging viewers to view the signal on satellite, cable or a digital broadcast channel 62.2.
The tower reached 383 feet, and two antennas, analog and digital, that weighed 7 tons each, extended the height another 75 feet into the air, according to WSPA-TV.
No injuries were reported, according to the AP.
